Update for Tuesday...

Apart from some minor problems, Edi continues to get better little by little.  I am thrilled to get a short email yesterday from Vivien on another matter and she did mention Edi even managed to walk a foot out of the door !!

He still has some ways to go but I also sensed after the consultation by the psychiatrists, he is now finally allowing others around him to take charge and allow his body to keep pace with the thoughts that run in his mind.

He is the extract from Vivien's email this morning..

"Mon, 30/11/09
5.20 pm visit -  Edi has chest pains and ate very little for dinner. Panadol was administered but not good enough to kill the pain, so an hour later they gave him something stronger.   He slept much of the time until 8.20 pm when I left.

Tue, 01/12/09
8.15 am visit - he was determined and alert, wanting to use the bathroom to brush his teeth instead of doing it in bed.  Agonisingly slow (but Nurses Julian and Stephen were wonderfully patient and encouraging) he made it and was still intent on walking back to sit up on the chair.  However, at the bathroom door, he had the wisdom to say "I need help" and we helped him back to bed.  Bossy Sandi came in all ready to get him on his stroller !  Stephen said Edi was feeling dizzy and nauseous (side effects of painkiller), so she returned 1.1/2 hrs later to get him out of the room door by a foot.

Before that round of physiotherapy, 3 psychiatrists came by and the Consultant (Dr Bernard ?) spoke to Edi for close to ½ hr during which time, Edi cried a bit.  I was out of the room but the Consultant is certain that Edi's case is one of reactive depression, ie, it was triggered by an experience and when that experience is past, the depression will leave as well.  He suggested to Edi to accept that for the time being he must allow others to help him until he's able to take care of himself again.  His mind is way ahead of his body and Bernard encouraged him to think of how to help the body to catch up with his mind.

Head Nurse David has had the doctors putting in an application for Rehab program for Edi.  When he eats better, they will stop the feeding tube during the day.  By the time the tube comes out, he should be stronger and ready to move into the Rehab building where it's nicer and quieter, so David says.  Next, Edi will leave that place for home.

Again, for breakfast and lunch, Edi had no more than a few mouthfuls of food.  Lunch looked quite good with some minced chicken although the kitchen had melted a cheese slice on it but let me not complain that my brother can now consume minced meat!.  When sis comes this evening with the congee, hopefully he can be enticed to eat a lot more."
